PeriodenLebenserwartung, or period life expectancy, is a statistical measure that estimates the average number of years a person would live if current mortality rates were to remain constant throughout their lifetime. It is calculated based on the death rates observed in a specific year for different age groups within a population. For example, a period life expectancy of 75 years at birth for a given year means that, on average, a newborn in that year would live to be 75 years old, assuming the age-specific mortality rates of that particular year persist.

This measure differs from cohort life expectancy, which considers actual mortality rates experienced by a specific group of people born in the same year as they age. Period life expectancy provides a snapshot of current mortality conditions and is useful for comparing the health and longevity of populations at a specific point in time. It is sensitive to short-term fluctuations in mortality, such as those caused by pandemics or major public health crises, which can cause the period life expectancy to temporarily decrease. Conversely, improvements in healthcare or reductions in mortality can lead to an increase in the period life expectancy. It is a widely used indicator in demography and public health to assess population health and project future demographic trends.
