Perimyydellä

Perimyydellä is a Finnish term that translates to "inheritance" or "hereditary succession." It refers to the legal and social process by which property, rights, and obligations are transferred from a deceased person to their heirs. This transfer can occur either through a will (testamentti) or by law if no will exists (lainmukainen perimys). Finnish inheritance law dictates the order of heirs and their respective shares.

The primary heirs are typically the deceased's descendants, followed by their parents, siblings, and other relatives. If there are no surviving relatives, the estate may revert to the state. Finnish law also provides for a "forced share" (lakiosa), which ensures that certain close relatives, such as children, receive a minimum portion of the inheritance regardless of the deceased's wishes in a will.

The process of settling an estate (perunkirjoitus) involves identifying the deceased's assets and debts, determining the heirs, and dividing the estate accordingly. This usually requires a formal inventory of the estate and a meeting of the heirs. Inheritance tax (perintövero) may also be levied on the value of the inherited assets, depending on the relationship between the deceased and the heir and the value of the inheritance.
