PUVA therapy is a type of phototherapy used to treat certain skin conditions. The name PUVA is an acronym derived from Psoralen, a photosensitizing drug, and Ultraviolet A (UVA) light. The treatment involves administering psoralen, either orally or topically, to the patient, followed by exposure to UVA radiation. Psoralen makes the skin more sensitive to light, and UVA light then penetrates the skin.

The combination of psoralen and UVA light works by reducing inflammation and slowing down the rapid growth of skin cells, which is characteristic of conditions like psoriasis. It is also used for eczema and other dermatological disorders that do not respond to conventional treatments. PUVA therapy is typically administered in a clinical setting under the supervision of a dermatologist. Patients usually undergo multiple treatment sessions per week over a period of several weeks or months, depending on the severity and type of skin condition being treated.

While effective, PUVA therapy has potential side effects. These can include nausea, headaches, and skin redness or burning (similar to sunburn). Long-term side effects may include premature skin aging and an increased risk of skin cancer, particularly squamous cell carcinoma. Therefore, regular skin examinations are recommended for individuals undergoing long-term PUVA treatment. Precautions are taken to protect the eyes during treatment, such as wearing UVA-blocking sunglasses.
