PICAktivität

PICAaktivität is a neologistic term occasionaly encountered in German-language neuroimaging and cerebrovascular discussions. It refers to the functional status of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) in terms of blood flow and perfusion within its territory. The expression is not widely standardized and is not a formal diagnostic category, but it is used to describe how actively the PICA is delivering blood to the cerebellum under various physiological or pathological conditions.

Conceptually, PICAaktivität encompasses measures of flow, velocity and volume of perfused blood, as well as the contribution of the PICA to overall cerebellar perfusion. Clinically, assessing PICAaktivität can help evaluate the adequacy of collateral circulation in the vertebrobasilar system, detect hypoperfusion in the PICA territory, and inform decisions in acute stroke or neurosurgical planning. It may also be discussed when interpreting responses to reperfusion therapies or during vasospasm evaluation.

Measurement of PICAaktivität relies on imaging-based techniques. Doppler ultrasound can assess flow in the vertebral and proximal PICA arteries. Magnetic resonance and computed tomography perfusion imaging provide qualitative and quantitative estimates of regional blood flow. Time-resolved MR angiography or CT angiography and, when necessary, digital subtraction angiography can illustrate flow patterns and collateral routes. The term remains informal; standard practice typically describes PICA perfusion, flow, or perfusion status rather than using the single label PICAaktivität.
