Orbitalplatte

The orbitalplatte, also known as the orbital floor, is a thin, flat structure located at the base of the orbit of the eye. It is composed of dense connective tissue and is crucial for the stability and function of the eye. The orbitalplatte serves several important functions, including providing structural support to the eye, protecting the optic nerve, and facilitating the movement of the eye muscles.

The orbitalplatte is situated between the orbit (the bony cavity that houses the eye) and the orbit's contents, such as the eye itself, extraocular muscles, and optic nerve. It is connected to the orbital walls by fibrous tissue and is covered by the conjunctiva, a mucous membrane that lines the inner surface of the eyelids and the outer surface of the eyeball.

The orbitalplatte plays a vital role in maintaining the shape and volume of the orbit. It helps to prevent the eye from prolapsing (protruding) into the orbit and contributes to the overall stability of the eye. Additionally, the orbitalplatte aids in the transmission of forces generated by the extraocular muscles, allowing for smooth and coordinated eye movements.

In cases of orbital trauma or inflammation, the orbitalplatte may be affected, leading to symptoms such as diplopia (double vision), ptosis (drooping of the eyelid), and proptosis (protrusion of the eye). Proper diagnosis and treatment of these conditions often require a thorough understanding of the orbitalplatte's anatomy and function.
