Oksidoreduktiot, also known as redox reactions, are chemical reactions involving the transfer of electrons between two chemical species. These reactions are fundamental to many chemical processes, including combustion, respiration, and photosynthesis. A redox reaction can be broken down into two half-reactions: oxidation and reduction. Oxidation is the loss of electrons by a species, while reduction is the gain of electrons by a species.

In a redox reaction, one species is oxidized and another is reduced. The oxidized species is called the reducing agent because it causes the reduction of another species. Conversely, the reduced species is called the oxidizing agent because it causes the oxidation of another species. The sum of the oxidation and reduction half-reactions constitutes the overall redox reaction.

The concept of oxidation states is crucial for identifying and understanding redox reactions. An oxidation state, or oxidation number, is a hypothetical charge that an atom would have if all its bonds to different atoms were purely ionic. By tracking changes in oxidation states, one can determine which species are oxidized and which are reduced. For instance, in the reaction between sodium and chlorine to form sodium chloride, sodium's oxidation state increases from 0 to +1 (oxidation), while chlorine's oxidation state decreases from 0 to -1 (reduction).

Redox reactions are ubiquitous in nature and industry. They are responsible for the energy released in batteries, the rusting of iron, and the metabolism of food in living organisms. Understanding redox chemistry is essential for fields ranging from electrochemistry to environmental science and biochemistry.
