Notedmarked

Notedmarked is a concept in the field of digital annotation that describes a two-layer approach to marking up text or other content. In this scheme, each annotation carries both a noted component, which stores free-form commentary or rationale, and a marked component, which encodes a categorical status such as verified, uncertain, disputed, or approved. The combination is intended to make the annotation more actionable and traceable.

The term is not tied to a single official standard. It arose in online discussions and research on scholarly markup and data curation during the early 2010s and has since been used descriptively in various project descriptions. Because implementations vary, notedmarked is more of a concept or pattern than a formal specification.

Structure and encoding typically involve attaching a Notedmarked annotation to a unit of content—such as a passage, line, or metadata element. The noted part is human-readable text, while the marked part uses a controlled vocabulary or tag. Many implementations allow tagging of provenance details, including who created the annotation, when it was created, and what source it stems from. Common encoding possibilities include TEI-based schemas, JSON-LD, or custom XML/JSON formats.

Applications include scholarly transcription projects, collaborative document analysis, and dataset curation in digital humanities. Benefits include clearer justification for changes, improved audit trails, and enhanced collaboration. Limitations involve inconsistent practices across projects, potential redundancy, and the need for governance to maintain a coherent vocabulary and encoding strategy.
