Nogay

Nogay is a Turkic ethnic group primarily found in regions of Southern Russia, particularly within the Republic of Dagestan, alongside smaller communities in other parts of the North Caucasus. They are descendants of the Nogai Horde, a medieval confederation of nomadic Turkic tribes that played a significant role in Eurasian history during the 15th and 16th centuries.

The Nogay people speak the Nogai language, a member of the Kipchak branch of the Turkic language family. Over time, many Nogays have adopted Russian as their primary language due to longstanding political and social influences, though efforts continue to preserve and promote their indigenous tongue.

Historically, the Nogay have been nomadic and semi-nomadic, traditionally engaged in pastoralism, cattle herding, and trade. Their culture reflects a blend of Turkic, Mongolic, and local Caucasian influences, characterized by distinctive music, dance, and oral traditions. Islam, specifically Sunni Islam of the Hanafi school, is the predominant religion among the Nogay, shaping various aspects of their cultural and social life.

Today, the Nogay number approximately 70,000 to 100,000 individuals. They are recognized as a distinct ethnic group within the Russian Federation and are active in cultural preservation efforts, including language revitalization and the organization of traditional festivals. Despite modernization and integration into broader regional societies, the Nogay maintain a strong sense of ethnic identity and cultural heritage.
