Nitritereducing refers to the process by which certain microorganisms convert nitrite ions (NO2-) into other nitrogenous compounds. This is a crucial step in the nitrogen cycle, a biogeochemical process that circulates nitrogen through the Earth's biosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. Bacteria and archaea are the primary agents of nitritereducing. These organisms employ various metabolic pathways to achieve this reduction.
