Nenäkanavalle

Nenäkanavalle, also known as the nasolacrimal duct, is a crucial anatomical structure that facilitates the drainage of tears from the eye into the nasal cavity. This small channel begins at the puncta lacrimalia, which are tiny openings located at the inner corner of each eyelid, near the nose. From the puncta, the tear fluid travels through the canaliculi, two small tubes that merge into a common canaliculus before entering the lacrimal sac. The lacrimal sac is a small reservoir situated in a groove on the side of the nasal bone. From the lacrimal sac, the tears then descend through the nasolacrimal duct, a single tube that empties into the inferior meatus of the nasal cavity.

The primary function of the nenäkanavalle is to prevent the accumulation of excess tears on the ocular surface. This continuous drainage system is essential for maintaining clear vision and preventing irritation. When we blink, the eyelids act as pumps, helping to push tears through the nenäkanavalle. In addition to tear drainage, the nenäkanavalle also plays a role in protecting the eye by carrying away small debris and irritants. Blockages or inflammation of this duct can lead to various eye conditions, such as dacryocystitis (infection of the lacrimal sac) or epiphora (excessive tearing). These issues can cause discomfort, excessive watering, and potentially vision problems if left untreated.
