Nachfolgezuständen, a German term often translated as "succession states" or "successor states," refers to countries that have emerged from the dissolution of a larger, pre-existing state. These new entities typically inherit some or all of the territory, population, and sometimes the international legal status or debts of the former entity. The process of forming successor states can be complex, involving negotiations over borders, assets, and liabilities, as well as the establishment of new governments and national identities.

The concept of successor states is particularly relevant in international law and political science. It addresses questions such as which state is responsible for treaties signed by the predecessor state, how to divide the predecessor's assets and debts, and how to determine citizenship for the populations of the new states.
