NOx kibocsátást refers to the release of nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. Nitrogen oxides are a group of gases primarily composed of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). These gases are formed during high-temperature combustion processes, such as those occurring in internal combustion engines of vehicles, power plants, and industrial facilities.

The primary sources of NOx emissions are anthropogenic, meaning they are caused by human activities. Natural sources, like lightning strikes and microbial activity in soil, also contribute, but at significantly lower levels.

NOx emissions have several detrimental effects. They are significant contributors to air pollution, playing a key role in the formation of ground-level ozone, a major component of smog. Ground-level ozone can irritate the respiratory system, exacerbate asthma and other lung conditions, and damage vegetation. Furthermore, NOx contributes to acid rain, which can harm aquatic ecosystems, damage forests, and corrode buildings and materials.

Regulations worldwide aim to reduce NOx emissions through various strategies. These include the use of catalytic converters in vehicles, stricter emission standards for industrial processes, and the adoption of cleaner combustion technologies. Monitoring and controlling NOx emissions are crucial for improving air quality and protecting public health and the environment.
