Mylination is the process of a cell in the nervous system called an oligodendrocyte, or a sheath of oligodendrocytes, wrapping its extensions around an axon. The process is essential for increasing the speed of electrical impulses along nerve fibers and facilitating communication between neurons in the nervous system.

Mylination begins shortly after a neuron is formed and reaches adult length. The initial layer created during this process is called the innermost myelin sheath.
