Mereökosüsteemid, commonly known as marine ecosystems, encompass all habitats and communities of organisms that exist in the world's oceans and seas. They range from shallow coastal zones such as estuaries, mangrove swamps, and coral reefs, to deeper environments like continental shelves, deep-sea vents, and the open ocean. Each zone supports distinct species adaptations, driven by variations in light, temperature, salinity, and pressure.

The primary producers in marine ecosystems are phytoplankton, macroalgae, and seagrasses, which convert solar energy into organic matter through photosynthesis. These producers form the base of a complex trophic web that includes zooplankton, fish, marine mammals, seabirds, and bacteria. Predatory and scavenging species, as well as decomposers, play critical roles in nutrient cycling and energy flow.

Marine ecosystems deliver essential ecosystem services. They regulate global climate by sequestering carbon in biomass and sediments, filter pollutants, provide food and livelihoods for human populations, and sustain biodiversity that underpins marine biological research and pharmaceutical development. Many marine habitats are also cultural and recreational assets, contributing to tourism and national heritage.

Human activities pose significant threats to the health of marine ecosystems. Overfishing, habitat destruction, plastic pollution, acidification, and warming waters alter species distributions, disrupt reproductive cycles, and diminish resilience. Conservation strategies emphasize marine protected areas, sustainable fishing practices, pollution control, and international cooperation to mitigate climate change impacts. Ongoing scientific research employs satellite monitoring, genomic analysis, and ecological modeling to better understand ecosystem dynamics and inform policy decisions.
