Meltthrough is a term used to describe the phenomenon where a material, typically a solid, undergoes a change of state to a liquid due to the absorption of heat. This process is fundamentally linked to the melting point of the substance, which is the specific temperature at which this transition occurs under a given pressure. When heat energy is added to a solid, its molecules vibrate more intensely. At the melting point, this kinetic energy becomes sufficient to overcome the intermolecular forces holding the molecules in a fixed, crystalline structure. The molecules can then move past each other, resulting in the liquid state.

Factors influencing meltthrough include the material's composition, the rate of heat transfer, and external pressure. Different materials have vastly different melting points; for instance, ice melts at 0 degrees Celsius, while iron melts at a much higher temperature of 1538 degrees Celsius. The speed at which heat is supplied can affect how quickly meltthrough occurs, although the melting point itself remains a characteristic property of the substance. Pressure can also play a role; for most substances, increased pressure raises the melting point, though water is a notable exception where increased pressure lowers the melting point.
