Linterprétant

L'interprétant is a term used in semiotics and linguistics to describe the process or entity that understands, receives, or interprets a sign or message. It is the counterpart to the sign and the object it refers to, forming a fundamental triad in some semiotic theories, particularly those influenced by Charles Sanders Peirce.

Theinterprétant is not necessarily a person. It can be another sign, a mental concept, a reaction, or any consequence that arises from the apprehension of a sign. For instance, when you see a red traffic light (the sign), your understanding that you should stop (the interprétant) is a cognitive response. This response can then lead to a physical action, which might be considered a further, more developed interprétant.

Some focus on the immediate mental effect a sign produces in an interpreter, while others consider a broader range of potential consequences or interpretations that could arise from the sign over time.
