The lens formula, also known as the thin lens equation, is a fundamental equation in optics that describes the relationship between the object distance (do), the image distance (di), and the focal length (f) of a lens. The formula is expressed as:

1/do + 1/di = 1/f

This equation is derived from the principles of refraction and assumes that the lens is thin, meaning its thickness is negligible compared to the radii of curvature of its surfaces. The lens formula is applicable to both converging (convex) and diverging (concave) lenses.

In the case of a converging lens, the image distance (di) is positive if the image is real (formed on the opposite side of the lens) and negative if the image is virtual (formed on the same side of the lens as the object). For a diverging lens, the image distance is always negative, indicating a virtual image.
