Lakehursts

Lakehurst is a borough located in Ocean County, New Jersey. It is situated in the central part of the state and is primarily a residential community. The borough was incorporated in 1921 from portions of Manchester Township. Historically, Lakehurst is known for its connection to aviation, particularly the site of the Hindenburg disaster.

The Lakehurst Naval Air Station, now part of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, was a significant site for airship operations in the early 20th century. On May 6, 1937, the German airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed while attempting to land at the Naval Air Station, resulting in the deaths of 36 people. This event marked a turning point in the use of airships for passenger transport.

Today, Lakehurst is a small, close-knit community. Its economy is influenced by its proximity to larger employment centers and the ongoing military presence at the joint base. The borough offers local amenities and parks for its residents. The area’s landscape is characterized by a mix of woodlands and suburban development. Lakehurst remains a place with a notable historical footnote in aviation history.
