The most common type is the internal combustion engine, where fuel is burned inside the engine itself, creating hot gases that expand and push pistons. Examples include gasoline engines and diesel engines found in vehicles. Another significant category is the external combustion engine, where the heat source is external to the engine. Steam engines are a prime example, where water is heated to produce steam, which then drives a turbine or piston.

Thermodynamic cycles are fundamental to understanding heat engines. The Otto cycle describes the operation of spark-ignition internal combustion engines, while the Diesel cycle applies to compression-ignition engines. The Rankine cycle is characteristic of steam power plants.

Other classifications exist based on the working fluid or the mechanism of operation. For instance, gas turbines operate on a continuous flow of hot gas, while Stirling engines use a closed-cycle regenerative heat exchange to convert heat into mechanical work. The efficiency of any heat engine is fundamentally limited by the Carnot limit, which depends on the temperatures of the hot and cold reservoirs. Understanding these different types and their underlying principles is crucial for advancements in energy conversion and efficiency.
