Kylmäainekierto, or refrigerant cycle, is a fundamental thermodynamic process used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. It involves the continuous circulation of a refrigerant through a closed loop of components. The primary goal is to absorb heat from a cold space and release it into a warmer environment.

The cycle typically comprises four main stages. First, the refrigerant enters the evaporator as a low-pressure liquid and absorbs heat from the space to be cooled, causing it to vaporize into a low-pressure gas. Second, this gas is then drawn into the compressor, where its pressure and temperature are significantly increased. Third, the high-pressure, high-temperature gas flows into the condenser, where it releases heat to the surrounding environment and condenses back into a high-pressure liquid. Finally, this liquid passes through an expansion valve, which reduces its pressure and temperature before it returns to the evaporator, completing the cycle.

The choice of refrigerant is crucial, as different substances have varying thermodynamic properties that affect efficiency and environmental impact. Common refrigerants include hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and newer, more environmentally friendly options like hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and natural refrigerants such as ammonia and carbon dioxide. The efficiency of the kylmäainekierto is measured by its Coefficient of Performance (COP), which is the ratio of cooling effect to the work input. Optimizing this cycle is essential for energy-efficient cooling solutions.
