Carrier proteins, known in Finnish as kuljetinproteiinit, are a class of proteins that facilitate the movement of molecules across cellular membranes, bind and transport molecules in solution, or deliver molecules to specific cellular sites. They are essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis, regulating hormone levels, delivering nutrients, and removing metabolic waste.

These proteins are diverse in structure and function and are broadly categorized by the type of molecules they transport. Lipid‑binding proteins, such as apolipoproteins and fatty‑acyl‑binding proteins, shuttle lipids and lipophilic compounds through aqueous environments. Steroid‑binding proteins like sex hormone‑binding globulin and corticosteroid‑binding globulin transport steroid hormones between tissues. Metal‑binding proteins, including transferrin, ceruloplasmin, and ferritin, regulate the distribution and storage of iron, copper, zinc, and other essential minerals. Carrier proteins also include transport proteins for gases, such as hemoglobin for oxygen and myoglobin for oxygen storage in muscle tissues. Additionally, chaperone proteins guide newly synthesized or misfolded proteins along the secretory pathway.

Carrier proteins can be plasma membrane-associated, functioning as channels or carriers in active uptake and secretion, or soluble proteins that bind and release their cargo in the extracellular or intracellular milieu. Their high specificity and affinity for target molecules make them critical modulators of metabolic pathways, signal transduction, and immune responses.

In biomedical research, abnormalities in carrier protein levels or function are implicated in numerous disorders. For instance, low albumin levels can impair drug distribution, while altered transferrin levels influence iron‑related diseases. Consequently, carrier proteins remain a focus of therapeutic development for conditions ranging from anemia to oncology and metabolic syndromes.
