Kokonaislukutyyppejä refers to categories or classifications of whole numbers. Whole numbers themselves are a fundamental concept in mathematics, encompassing zero and all positive and negative integers. Within this broad set, various subsets are defined based on their properties.

One of the most basic distinctions is between positive integers (also called natural numbers, though sometimes natural numbers include zero) and negative integers. Zero is unique as it is neither positive nor negative.

Another important classification is based on divisibility. Even numbers are integers divisible by 2, while odd numbers are integers that leave a remainder of 1 when divided by 2. Prime numbers are positive integers greater than 1 that have only two distinct positive divisors: 1 and themselves. Composite numbers are positive integers greater than 1 that are not prime, meaning they have more than two positive divisors. The number 1 is neither prime nor composite.

Further classifications can be made, such as perfect numbers (where the sum of their proper positive divisors equals the number itself), abundant numbers (where the sum of proper divisors is greater than the number), and deficient numbers (where the sum of proper divisors is less than the number). These different types of whole numbers allow mathematicians to study number theory in a more structured and detailed way, uncovering patterns and relationships within the number system.
