Kärnvapenkonventioner, or nuclear weapon conventions, refers to a body of international agreements and treaties aimed at controlling, limiting, and ultimately eliminating nuclear weapons. These conventions address various aspects of nuclear weapons, including their development, testing, proliferation, and use. The overarching goal is to prevent the catastrophic consequences of nuclear war and to promote global security through disarmament.

Key treaties within this framework include the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which entered into force in 1970. The NPT aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and further the goal of disarmament. Another significant agreement is the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which prohibits all nuclear explosions for both military and civilian purposes. While not yet in force, it has established a strong international norm against nuclear testing.

Further conventions address specific aspects such as the prohibition of nuclear weapons in certain regions, like the Treaty of Tlatelolco for Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Treaty of Pelindaba for Africa. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), adopted in 2017, represents a more recent effort to outright ban nuclear weapons, though it is not supported by nuclear-armed states. These conventions, through diplomatic negotiation and international cooperation, form the cornerstone of global efforts to manage the risks posed by nuclear weapons.
