Jäkälöiden

Jäkälöiden, a Finnish term, refers to lichens. Lichens are composite organisms that arise from algae or cyanobacteria living among the filaments of fungi in a symbiotic relationship. The algae or cyanobacteria provide food for the fungus through photosynthesis, while the fungus provides protection and structure. This symbiotic partnership allows lichens to colonize a wide variety of habitats, including harsh environments like bare rock, deserts, and the Arctic tundra, where few other organisms can survive.

Lichens exhibit an astonishing diversity of forms and colors, ranging from crusty, flat growths that cling tightly to surfaces (crustose) to leafy, flattened structures (foliose) and even shrub-like, branching forms (fruticose). Their appearance can vary greatly depending on the species, the environmental conditions, and the substrate they grow on. They play an important ecological role as pioneer species, breaking down rock and creating soil, and as a food source for various animals. They are also sensitive indicators of air quality, as many species cannot tolerate pollution. Historically, lichens have been used for various purposes, including dyes, medicines, and even food in some cultures.
