Immunoprotease

Immunoprotease refers to a class of proteases, which are enzymes that break down proteins, that play a significant role in the immune system. These enzymes are not just passive degraders of cellular components; they are actively involved in regulating immune responses, cell signaling, and the development and function of immune cells. Their activity is tightly controlled to prevent damage to healthy tissues while effectively clearing pathogens and cellular debris.

A key function of immunoproteases is in antigen processing, where they break down foreign proteins into smaller fragments that can be presented by immune cells to initiate a targeted response. They are also involved in the activation and maturation of immune cells, influencing processes like T-cell activation and the production of cytokines.
