Ilmausmuodot, also known as moods in English, are a grammatical category used in many languages to express the speaker's attitude or emotion towards the content of the sentence. They are typically formed by adding specific suffixes or inflections to the verb stem. Moods serve to convey various nuances of meaning, such as certainty, doubt, permission, obligation, or possibility.

In Finnish, for example, the indicative mood is used to state facts or express opinions, while the imperative mood is used to give commands or make requests. The conditional mood expresses hypothetical situations, and the potential mood indicates ability or possibility. The interrogative mood is used to form questions, and the optative mood expresses wishes or desires.

Moods are distinct from tense, which indicates the time of the action, and aspect, which describes the internal structure of the action. They are an essential component of grammar in many languages and play a crucial role in conveying the speaker's intended meaning.
