Iliturgi

Iliturgi was an ancient Iberian settlement located in what is now the province of Jaén in Andalusia, Spain. The site is situated near the modern town of Mengíbar. Iliturgi played a significant role during the Carthaginian and Roman periods in the Iberian Peninsula.

The settlement is believed to have been founded by the Iberians, likely a strategic location due to its proximity to the Guadalquivir River. Its importance grew considerably when it became a Carthaginian stronghold. During the Second Punic War, Iliturgi was a key point of contention between the Romans and Carthaginians. It was besieged and eventually captured by the Roman general Scipio Africanus in the 3rd century BCE.

Under Roman rule, Iliturgi continued to be an important center, although its exact status and prominence varied over time. Archaeological evidence suggests a flourishing Roman presence, including remains of buildings, fortifications, and pottery. The site has yielded artifacts that shed light on the daily life, economy, and culture of its inhabitants.
