An IPv6 datagram is the basic unit of data transmission in the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) network layer. It is analogous to an IP packet in IPv4. Each IPv6 datagram consists of a fixed-size header and a payload. The header contains crucial information for routing and delivery, such as source and destination addresses, traffic class, flow label, and hop limit. The payload typically carries data from a transport layer protocol like TCP or UDP.

Unlike IPv4, the IPv6 header is designed to be more efficient. It has a fixed size of 40 bytes, which simplifies processing by routers. Optional information that was previously part of the main IPv4 header is now handled through extension headers, which are only processed when needed. This streamlined header structure contributes to IPv6's improved performance and scalability.

The destination address in an IPv6 datagram can be a unicast, multicast, or anycast address, specifying a single host, a group of hosts, or the nearest host in a group, respectively. The hop limit field is decremented by each router along the path, preventing datagrams from circulating indefinitely. If the hop limit reaches zero before the datagram reaches its destination, it is discarded. The flow label field allows for special handling of real-time traffic.
