IL33mediated

IL33mediated refers to biological processes or outcomes that are initiated or influenced by the cytokine Interleukin-33 (IL-33). IL-33 is a member of the IL-1 family of cytokines and is known for its role in innate and adaptive immunity, as well as in tissue homeostasis and repair. It is typically found in extracellular space and is released from damaged or stressed cells, acting as an alarmin.

When IL-33 is released, it binds to its receptor, ST2 (also known as IL33R), which is expressed on a variety of immune cells including mast cells, basophils, eosinophils, and innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), as well as some non-immune cells. This binding triggers intracellular signaling pathways, leading to the activation of these cells. For example, IL33mediated activation of ILC2s results in the production of cytokines like IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13, which are crucial for type 2 immune responses involved in anti-parasite immunity, allergic inflammation, and tissue repair.

IL33mediated responses are implicated in a range of physiological and pathological conditions. In immunity, it plays a role in defense against helminth infections and in orchestrating allergic reactions such as asthma and atopic dermatitis. Beyond immunity, IL33mediated signaling contributes to the maintenance of tissue integrity and regeneration, particularly in organs like the heart, lung, and skin. Dysregulation of IL33mediated pathways can lead to chronic inflammatory diseases and fibrosis. Research into IL33mediated mechanisms is ongoing to understand its complex roles and to develop therapeutic strategies targeting this pathway for various diseases.
