Höyrytyskattilat, known in English as steam boilers, are enclosed vessels designed to heat water into steam under pressure. This steam is then used to power various industrial processes, generate electricity, or provide heating. The fundamental principle behind a steam boiler is the transfer of heat energy to water, causing it to vaporize and increase in volume and pressure.

Boilers come in various designs, but two common types are fire-tube and water-tube boilers. In a fire-tube boiler, hot combustion gases pass through tubes surrounded by water. In a water-tube boiler, water circulates through tubes that are heated by the combustion gases from the outside. The choice of boiler type depends on factors such as the required steam pressure, capacity, and fuel source.

The combustion process within a boiler typically involves burning fuels like coal, natural gas, oil, or biomass. This combustion generates hot flue gases that transfer heat to the water. Essential components of a steam boiler system include the firebox or furnace, tubes, a steam drum, and safety devices like pressure relief valves to prevent over-pressurization. Regular maintenance and operation according to safety standards are crucial for the efficient and safe functioning of any steam boiler.
