A gyökérmorféma, also known as a root morpheme, is the core element of a word that carries its primary semantic meaning. It is the smallest unit of language that cannot be further broken down into smaller meaningful parts. In Hungarian, where the concept is particularly relevant, a gyökérmorféma is often a standalone word that can be inflected or take affixes without losing its fundamental meaning. For instance, in the word "házak" (houses), "ház" is the gyökérmorféma, meaning "house." The "-ak" is a suffix indicating plurality. Similarly, in "futok" (I run), "fut" is the root morpheme, signifying the action of running, and "-ok" is a personal ending for the first person singular.

Gyökérmorféma can be both free and bound. A free root morpheme, like "fa" (tree) or "könnyű" (easy), can stand alone as a word. Bound root morphemes, however, must be attached to other morphemes to form a complete word, though they still carry a core meaning.
