Gastheerimmuniteit, also known as host immunity, refers to the complex defense mechanisms that an organism employs to protect itself from pathogens and other harmful substances. This immunity is a multifaceted system involving various cells, tissues, and molecules that work together to identify, neutralize, and eliminate threats. It is broadly divided into two main branches: innate immunity and adaptive immunity.

Innate immunity provides a rapid, non-specific defense that is present from birth. It includes physical barriers like skin and mucous membranes, as well as cellular components such as phagocytes (like macrophages and neutrophils) that engulf and destroy invaders. Chemical defenses, including inflammatory responses and antimicrobial substances, are also part of this system.

Adaptive immunity, on the other hand, is acquired over time and is highly specific to particular pathogens. It is characterized by its ability to recognize and remember specific antigens, leading to a more potent and targeted response upon re-exposure. Key players in adaptive immunity are lymphocytes, specifically B cells, which produce antibodies, and T cells, which can directly kill infected cells or help regulate the immune response. The development of immunological memory is a hallmark of adaptive immunity, enabling faster and more effective protection against previously encountered pathogens. Together, innate and adaptive immunity form a robust defense system crucial for survival.
