Fotoelektri refers to the photoelectric effect, a phenomenon where electrons are emitted from a material when light shines on it. This effect is a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics and has significant practical applications. The energy of the incident photons must be sufficient to overcome the work function of the material, which is the minimum energy required to remove an electron. When a photon's energy exceeds the work function, the excess energy is transferred to the emitted electron as kinetic energy.

The intensity of the light influences the number of emitted electrons, while the frequency of the light determines the energy of each emitted electron. This relationship between light and electron emission was crucial in developing the understanding of light as both a wave and a particle, a concept known as wave-particle duality.

Key experiments demonstrating the photoelectric effect, notably by Heinrich Hertz and later explained by Albert Einstein, confirmed that light behaves as discrete packets of energy called photons. This explanation earned Einstein the Nobel Prize in Physics.

The photoelectric effect finds applications in various technologies. Photomultiplier tubes, used for detecting faint light, and solar cells, which convert sunlight into electricity, both rely on this principle.
