Flaviinimolekyyleillä, also known as flavins, are a group of organic compounds that play crucial roles in various biological processes, particularly in redox reactions. The core structure of a flavin molecule consists of an isoalloxazine ring system. This system is a fused three-ring structure, containing pyrimidine and pyrazine rings.

The most well-known flavin molecules are flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). Both FMN and FAD are derivatives of riboflavin (vitamin B2). Riboflavin itself is a yellow pigment. FMN is formed when riboflavin is phosphorylated, and FAD is formed when FMN is further adenylated. These coenzymes are essential for the activity of a large class of enzymes called flavoenzymes.

Flavoenzymes catalyze a wide range of metabolic reactions, including those involved in energy production, fatty acid oxidation, and the metabolism of amino acids and other biomolecules. The key functional aspect of flavins in these enzymes is their ability to undergo reversible reduction and oxidation. The isoalloxazine ring can accept one or two electrons, forming semiquinone radicals or fully reduced hydroquinones, respectively. This redox cycling allows flavins to act as electron carriers in biological systems.

Beyond their role in enzyme catalysis, flavins can also participate in light absorption and emission. Riboflavin, for instance, is fluorescent. This property has been exploited in various analytical techniques and imaging applications. The biological significance of flavin molecules underscores their importance in maintaining cellular function and overall organismal health.
