Enzymsubstratbindung refers to the specific interaction between an enzyme and its substrate. Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions without being consumed in the process. A substrate is the molecule upon which an enzyme acts. This binding is a crucial step in enzyme function, as it positions the substrate correctly for the reaction to occur.

The binding typically occurs at a specific region on the enzyme called the active site. The active site is a three-dimensional pocket or groove within the enzyme's structure. Its shape and chemical properties are complementary to the substrate, allowing for a precise fit, often described by models like the lock-and-key model or the induced-fit model. The lock-and-key model suggests a rigid active site perfectly matching the substrate, while the induced-fit model proposes that the active site can change its shape slightly upon substrate binding to achieve a tighter fit.

This interaction is usually non-covalent, involving various weak bonds such as hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, van der Waals forces, and hydrophobic interactions. These forces hold the enzyme and substrate together temporarily. Once bound, the enzyme facilitates the conversion of the substrate into product(s). Following the reaction, the product(s) are released from the active site, and the enzyme is free to bind to another substrate molecule, continuing the catalytic cycle. The specificity of enzyme-substrate binding ensures that each enzyme catalyzes a particular reaction, contributing to the highly organized nature of biological processes.
