Entgeltpunkten
Entgeltpunkte, often translated as "earnings points" or "pension credits," are a fundamental component of the statutory pension system in Germany. They represent an individual's income relative to the average income of all insured persons in a given year. Each year, an insured person receives a certain number of Entgeltpunkte based on their earnings. If an individual earns exactly the average income in a year, they receive one Entgeltpunkt for that year. Earning more than the average results in more than one Entgeltpunkt, while earning less results in a fraction of an Entgeltpunkt. These points accumulate over an individual's working life. The total number of Entgeltpunkte accumulated by the time of retirement is a key factor in determining the amount of the statutory pension. The pension amount is calculated by multiplying the total Entgeltpunkte by a pension value factor and an access factor, which accounts for early or late retirement. Therefore, Entgeltpunkte serve as a measure of an individual's contribution and entitlement within the German pension insurance scheme.
