Elektronátalakulások, also known as redox reactions, are chemical reactions in which electrons are transferred from one species to another. These reactions are fundamental in chemistry and play a crucial role in various natural and industrial processes. The term "redox" is derived from the two parts of the reaction: reduction, where a species gains electrons, and oxidation, where a species loses electrons.

In a redox reaction, the species that loses electrons is called the reducing agent, and the species that gains electrons is called the oxidizing agent. The reducing agent is oxidized, and the oxidizing agent is reduced. For example, in the reaction between iron (Fe) and oxygen (O2) to form iron oxide (Fe2O3), iron is the reducing agent and oxygen is the oxidizing agent. Iron loses electrons and is oxidized, while oxygen gains electrons and is reduced.

Redox reactions can be represented using oxidation numbers, which indicate the degree of oxidation of an atom in a compound. The oxidation number of an element in its elemental form is zero, while in a compound, it can be positive, negative, or zero. The sum of the oxidation numbers in a neutral compound is zero, and in a polyatomic ion, it equals the charge of the ion.

Redox reactions are essential in many biological processes, such as cellular respiration and photosynthesis, as well as in industrial applications, such as electroplating and corrosion prevention. Understanding redox reactions is crucial for predicting and controlling chemical reactions in various fields.
