Eelkäivitussüsteem is an Estonian term that translates to "pre-start system" or "pre-ignition system" in English. It refers to a set of components and processes within an internal combustion engine designed to facilitate easier and more reliable starting, particularly in cold weather conditions. The primary function of an eelkäivitussüsteem is to ensure that the engine components are at an optimal temperature and that the fuel-air mixture is prepared for efficient combustion before the main ignition sequence begins.

Common elements of an eelkäivitussüsteem can include glow plugs, which are electric heaters embedded in the combustion chamber of diesel engines. When activated, these glow plugs heat up, warming the air and fuel in the cylinder, which aids in ignition. In some gasoline engines, a similar concept might involve pre-heating the intake air or fuel.
