EPIRB PLB satellite refers to the use of satellites in the operation of Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) and Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs). These devices are crucial safety tools designed to transmit distress signals to rescue authorities. When activated, an EPIRB or PLB transmits a coded message containing the device's unique identification number and, if equipped, its precise GPS location.

The primary satellite systems involved in this process are part of the Cospas-Sarsat program. This international satellite-based search and rescue alert system utilizes a network of low-Earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary (GEO) satellites. When an EPIRB or PLB transmits, these satellites detect the signal. The LEO satellites orbit the Earth at lower altitudes, providing global coverage but with a delay until they pass over the beacon. GEO satellites are positioned at higher altitudes, offering continuous coverage over a specific region but with less precise location accuracy without a GPS input from the beacon.

Once a satellite detects the distress signal, it relays the information to a ground station. From the ground station, the alert is forwarded to the relevant Search and Rescue (SAR) authorities, who then initiate rescue operations. The inclusion of GPS in modern EPIRBs and PLBs significantly speeds up the location process, allowing rescuers to pinpoint the distress location much faster. This satellite-assisted system has been instrumental in saving countless lives at sea and in remote terrestrial environments.
