ECGmonitoring refers to the process of continuously observing and recording the electrical activity of the heart using an electrocardiogram (ECG). This electrical activity is generated by the heart's natural pacemaker and conducted through the heart muscle, causing it to contract and pump blood. An ECG machine detects these electrical impulses on the skin's surface and translates them into a waveform that can be analyzed.

There are several reasons why ECG monitoring might be employed. It is crucial in diagnosing a wide range of cardiac conditions, including arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), myocardial infarction (heart attack), and ischemia (reduced blood flow to the heart muscle). It is also used to assess the effectiveness of cardiac medications and to monitor patients during and after surgical procedures.

Different types of ECG monitoring exist depending on the duration and context. A standard 12-lead ECG provides a snapshot of the heart's electrical activity at a specific moment. For longer-term observation, portable devices like Holter monitors, which record continuously for 24-48 hours, or event monitors, which record only when triggered by the patient or an abnormality, are used. Implantable loop recorders offer even longer-term monitoring, sometimes for years. The data collected from ECG monitoring is interpreted by healthcare professionals to identify any deviations from normal heart rhythm and electrical patterns, aiding in diagnosis and treatment planning.
