Djúpalónssandur

Djúpalónssandur is a black pebble beach located on the Snæfellsnes peninsula in western Iceland. It is known for its striking black sands, which are made up of volcanic rock fragments. The beach is also famous for its historical remnants, particularly the lifting stones, known as "aflraunasteinar" in Icelandic. These stones, ranging in weight from 22 to 154 kilograms, were historically used by fishermen to test their strength and qualify for work on the fishing boats that would launch from the shore.

The dramatic coastline of Djúpalónssandur features impressive rock formations and sea stacks, including the iconic Gatklettur (Arch Rock). The remains of the British trawler E.M. 19, which ran aground on the beach in 1948, are still visible, adding a poignant historical element to the landscape. The powerful waves and currents of the North Atlantic make swimming dangerous, and visitors are advised to exercise caution. The beach is accessible via a hiking trail from a nearby parking area, and the walk itself offers stunning views of the surrounding volcanic terrain.
