Denitrifikationsvägarna, or denitrification pathways, refer to the different biochemical routes through which nitrate and nitrite are reduced to nitrogen gas (N2) in anaerobic environments. This process is a crucial part of the global nitrogen cycle, preventing the accumulation of excessive nitrogen compounds in ecosystems.

The primary microbial process involves a series of enzyme-catalyzed reductions. Starting with nitrate (NO3-), it is first reduced to nitrite (NO2-) by the enzyme nitrate reductase. This is followed by the reduction of nitrite to nitric oxide (NO), then to nitrous oxide (N2O), and finally to nitrogen gas (N2). Each step is mediated by specific reductase enzymes, such as nitrite reductase, nitric oxide reductase, and nitrous oxide reductase.

Several different pathways can occur, depending on the specific microorganisms present and the environmental conditions. Some microbes can utilize all steps, while others may only perform partial denitrification. The availability of electron donors (like organic matter) and the redox potential of the environment significantly influence which pathways are favored. Complete denitrification leads to the return of nitrogen to the atmosphere, while incomplete denitrification can result in the release of intermediate compounds like N2O, a potent greenhouse gas. Understanding these pathways is vital for managing nitrogen pollution in aquatic systems and for optimizing wastewater treatment processes.
