Cellvägg

Cellvägg is a term used in biology to describe a rigid outer layer that surrounds the plasma membrane of plant cells, fungi, algae, and bacteria. It provides structural support and protection to the cell, preventing excessive water uptake and maintaining cell shape. The composition of the cell wall varies depending on the organism. In plants, the primary component is cellulose, a complex carbohydrate. Fungal cell walls are typically made of chitin, another polysaccharide. Bacterial cell walls are composed mainly of peptidoglycan, a polymer of sugars and amino acids. The presence and structure of a cell wall are key characteristics used in classifying microorganisms. In some organisms, like plants, the cell wall can also be involved in cell-to-cell communication and defense against pathogens. The rigidity of the cell wall plays a crucial role in the overall structure and integrity of tissues and organs in multicellular organisms.
