Atseetaldehüüdiks

Atseetaldehüüdiks refers to the Estonian term for acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is an organic chemical compound with the formula CH3CHO. It is also known as ethanal. It is a volatile, colorless liquid with a pungent, fruity odor. Acetaldehyde is a highly reactive compound and is an intermediate in many important industrial and biological processes.

In industry, acetaldehyde is a significant chemical intermediate used in the production of a wide range of other chemicals, including acetic acid, pyridine, and pentaerythritol. It is also used in the synthesis of perfumes, dyes, and plastics. A common method for its industrial production is the oxidation of ethylene, known as the Wacker process, or the hydration of acetylene.

Biologically, acetaldehyde is a product of alcohol metabolism. When ethanol (the alcohol in alcoholic beverages) is consumed, it is broken down in the liver by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase into acetaldehyde. This intermediate is then further metabolized by the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase into acetate, which is then broken down into carbon dioxide and water. Acetaldehyde is toxic and is responsible for many of the unpleasant symptoms of a hangover, such as nausea, headache, and vomiting. High levels of acetaldehyde can also damage cells and DNA, contributing to the long-term health risks associated with chronic alcohol abuse, including liver damage and an increased risk of certain cancers.
