Artikulationsarten

Artikulationsarten, a German term, refers to the different ways in which speech sounds are produced. This concept is fundamental in phonetics and phonology, the study of speech sounds and their organization within a language. Artikulationsarten describe the manner in which the airflow from the lungs is modified by the vocal tract to create distinct sounds.

There are several primary categories of Artikulationsarten. Stops, also known as plosives, involve a complete blockage of airflow, followed by a sudden release. Examples include the sounds /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, and /g/. Fricatives are produced by creating a narrow constriction in the vocal tract, forcing air through it to create audible friction. Common fricatives include /f/, /v/, /s/, /z/, /ʃ/ (as in "ship"), and /ʒ/ (as in "measure"). Affricates begin as a stop and are released as a fricative, such as the sounds /tʃ/ (as in "church") and /dʒ/ (as in "judge").

Other Artikulationsarten include nasals, where the airflow is diverted through the nasal cavity while the oral passage is blocked, like /m/, /n/, and /ŋ/ (as in "sing"). Liquids encompass lateral sounds, where air flows around the sides of the tongue, such as /l/, and rhotics, like the English /r/, which can be produced in various ways. Glides, also known as semivowels, involve a smooth, vowel-like articulation that transitions into a vowel, such as /w/ and /j/ (as in "yes"). Understanding these Artikulationsarten is crucial for analyzing and describing the sound systems of languages.
