ArfGAP1

ARFGAP1, also known as ARF GTPase activating protein 1, is a protein encoded by the ARFGAP1 gene. This gene is located on human chromosome 12. ARFGAP1 is a member of the ARFGAP family of proteins, which are characterized by their role in regulating ADP-ribosylation factor (ARF) GTPases. ARF proteins are small GTPases that play crucial roles in various cellular processes, including vesicular transport, Golgi apparatus organization, and actin cytoskeleton remodeling.

ARFGAP1 functions as a GTPase-activating protein (GAP) for certain ARF proteins. GAPs stimulate the intrinsic GTPase activity of their target GTPases, leading to their inactivation. By activating ARF GTPases, ARFGAP1 modulates their downstream signaling pathways. This regulation is critical for maintaining cellular homeostasis and proper organelle function.

Research has indicated that ARFGAP1 is involved in the formation of tubular endosomes and in the trafficking of vesicles. It has been implicated in processes such as endocytosis and autophagy.
