Antiherbivory

Antiherbivory refers to the strategies and adaptations employed by plants to defend themselves against herbivorous animals, which consume plant material. These defenses can be categorized into two main types: chemical and physical.

Chemical defenses involve the production of secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, terpenoids, and phenolics, which are toxic or unpalatable to herbivores. Some plants also produce sticky or hairy substances that trap herbivores or make them difficult to remove. Additionally, plants may employ temporal defenses, such as the production of defensive compounds only when herbivory is detected, or spatial defenses, such as the concentration of defensive compounds in specific parts of the plant.

Antiherbivory strategies are crucial for plant survival and reproduction, as they help to protect the plant from being consumed by herbivores.
