Amfleet

Amfleet is a fleet of single-level railroad passenger cars used by Amtrak, the national passenger railroad company of the United States. These cars were designed to be more comfortable and modern than the older equipment they replaced. The first Amfleet cars were delivered in 1975, built by the Budd Company.

The Amfleet fleet consists of two main types: Amfleet I and Amfleet II. Amfleet I cars are primarily used for shorter-distance services and typically include coach seats and cafe/lounge areas. Amfleet II cars are designed for longer-distance routes and feature more spacious seating, as well as slumbercoach accommodations for overnight travel. These cars are characterized by their distinctive fluted stainless steel sides, a design feature that harks back to earlier eras of passenger rail travel.

Amfleet cars are a common sight on many Amtrak routes across the country, forming the backbone of much of the company's intercity service. They have undergone various refurbishments over the years to maintain their reliability and passenger comfort. The Amfleet fleet has been instrumental in Amtrak's efforts to modernize its passenger rail service and attract travelers to train travel. Their widespread use and consistent presence have made them a recognizable symbol of Amtrak's operations.
