AVohitusoireyhtymän, often translated as AV block or atrioventricular block, refers to a condition where the electrical signals that cause the heart to beat are disrupted between the atria and the ventricles. This disruption affects the normal conduction of these impulses, leading to a slower or irregular heartbeat. The atrioventricular node, a critical part of the heart's electrical system, is typically involved.

AVohitusoireyhtymän is categorized into different degrees based on the severity of the blockage. First-degree AV block is the mildest form, characterized by a delayed but consistent transmission of electrical signals. Second-degree AV block involves intermittent failure of the signal to pass through to the ventricles, leading to some dropped beats. This can be further divided into Mobitz type I (Wenckebach) and Mobitz type II. Third-degree, or complete, AV block represents a complete interruption of the electrical pathway, where the atria and ventricles beat independently.

Symptoms can vary depending on the degree of the block. Mild forms might be asymptomatic, while more severe blocks can cause dizziness, fainting (syncope), shortness of breath, chest pain, and fatigue. The underlying causes of AVohitusoireyhtymän can include heart disease, aging, certain medications, electrolyte imbalances, and congenital heart defects. Diagnosis typically involves an electrocardiogram (ECG), which can identify the characteristic patterns of conduction abnormalities. Treatment strategies depend on the severity and cause and may range from observation to medications or the implantation of a pacemaker to restore a normal heart rhythm.
