ATPmolekyylits refers to adenosine triphosphate, a molecule that serves as the primary energy currency of cells in all known forms of life. It is composed of adenine, a nitrogenous base, a ribose sugar, and three phosphate groups. The energy released when the terminal phosphate bond is broken is utilized by cells to power various biological processes, including muscle contraction, nerve impulse propagation, and chemical synthesis.

The synthesis of ATP occurs through cellular respiration, a metabolic process that breaks down glucose and other fuel molecules in the presence of oxygen. This process generates a significant amount of ATP. Alternatively, ATP can be produced through substrate-level phosphorylation during glycolysis and the Krebs cycle, or through photophosphorylation during photosynthesis. When a cell requires energy, ATP is hydrolyzed to ADP and inorganic phosphate, releasing energy. Subsequently, ADP is rephosphorylated to ATP, typically using energy derived from food or sunlight.
